About Canvas Republic

Times are changing, as Bob Dylan once sort-of sang. And while he may have been referring to cultural revolution and the empowerment of youth, we're talking about something much more important: making your home stylish.

Our 20th century love affair with chintz is now so last century and we've all been bitten by the interior design bug. Stylish furnishings are now readily available on the high street at prices to suit most pockets. But aren't they't they forgetting something?

Good quality, beautiful artwork and canvas prints are difficult to come by on the high street. Yes, the candle bowls and faux-leather placemats are great but we need something for the walls. What's that you say? Clip frames? This really won't do...

Allow us to introduce ourselves. Canvas Republic is a family-owned canvas printing business, founded in 2004 to fill an unsightly gap in the interior decor market.

Through a combination of innovations in canvas printing technology and our own research, we created a high-quality range of canvas prints, showcasing our own exclusive, contemporary designs.

Our raison d'être is to provide an affordable solution to the problem of boring, bare walls by adding some unique, artistic spice to your space.

This commitment to achieving the ultimate quality finish whilst continuing to print canvases has seen the firm go from strength-to-strength; Canvas Republic prints can now be found in thousands of homes and businesses worldwide.

Of course, this is just the beginning. 2007 saw the launch of the glossy, new-look website, allowing you order any of our pieces in a range of sizes, to be delivered straight to your door.

Since then, we've tried to create the most informative canvas art website on the web, with a wealth of information available on our quality page, and regularly-updated articles on our news page.

We believe that offering as much information as possible on how our canvasses are printed and made will allow you to make better purchases.

In 2008, we plan to continue increasing our ranges. We still don't believe that the high street is offering the kind of canvas prints we'd like to see in our homes.

With a combination of inspiration from the latest trends, as well as our own distinctive flair, we hope to present a range of affordable canvas prints to suit any home.

Please see our online shop to see the ranges, or the Quality Guide for a look at how our canvas prints are made.

Canvas Art History

Printed canvas art, or Giclée as it's sometimes known, is an exciting development in the world of art and interior design. Using inkjet printing technology, it is now possible to print directly onto heavyweight art medias such as cotton and polyester canvas.

The advantage of printing with inkjet technology over older methods such as screen printing is that the artwork can be printed in much higher resolution with a huge colour gamut available.

With screen prints, the image is composed of regular patterns of visible dots, gradiented to provide varying tones. By contrast, inkjet technology utilises a fine spray of microscopic ink droplets, to achieve a much more detailed print, allowing spectaular reproductions of photos and artwork.

A digital print of a work that originated as a painting or drawing is a reproduction and therefore is not an original print." We can see that the new generation of digital canvas art provides the opportunity to own original prints, outside the costly realm of numbered limited editions and lithographic reproductions. A full interior can be filled with exciting artwork at a much lower cost than was previously possible before the advent of modern canvas art.

Shopping online for Canvas Art In spite of the growing popularity for this new art format, large high street vendors have been slow to stock canvas print ranges. High street chains require large supply volumes at low cost, and perhaps this is incongruous with the hand crafted nature of canvas art.

The increase in quality of printed canvasses has been coupled with a surge in popularity, and there are a huge number of online retailers offering a canvas art product.

This explosion of a new medium has driven prices down, and enabled many more people to decorate their home with high quality artwork. Consumers no longer need to pay lofty gallery prices in order to furnish their space with contemporary artwork.

Of course, many will prefer the uniqueness and prestige associated with original paintings, which still command high price-tags. However, the prints created by contemporary digital artists are still original prints, as defined by the International Fine Print Dealers Association: "The distinction as to whether a digital print is an "original print" is determined by whether the work was created by the artist to be realized as a print."

The largest presence is certainly online, and search engines such as Google provide access to a busy virtual marketplace where artists sell their own canvas art ranges direct by mail order.

This variety of suppliers choice means that you can select from a huge range of designs, from abstract to floral, landscape to celebrities.

The web provides the ultimate choice of canvas art for those looking for individual and exclusive artwork. Canvas Republic have created a stylish, easy-to-use website that allows its customers to purchase the latest styles at an affordable price.

Long live the Republic...
