Choosing quality canvas art from among the spectrum of suppliers on the web can often be tricky.
Canvas prints are handmade items, produced from digital artwork, and take both technical and manual skills to design, print and frame to high standard.
We often find that canvas art websites provide scarce information on the actual manufacturing process, ultimately leading to confusion and disappointment when making an order.
In light of the this, we feel that it's vital to arm you with with information you need to assess canvas art quality when making a purchase. |
|
Throughout the website, we try to bring you as much information about canvas art as possible, so you can be sure about your purchases as well as know exactly what to look for.
Using the information here, you will be able to make an informed choice when choosing your canvas prints.
As in our online shop, you can click the thumbnail images below to display a full-sized image. If you have any further questions about our canvas art and service, don't hesitate to ask!
We regularly add brand new information and articles to our News Page about canvas art and our other products, so please check this often! |
The best canvas art available on the market today is printed using inkjet technology, a process commonly called Giclée. Other methods include dye-sublimation and solvent, which generally offer less-vivid colour palettes.
All Canvas Republic art is printed at high resolution on superb matte canvas using UV inks. UV (pigment-based) inks provide enhanced lightfastness and durability over Dye-based inks, ensuring that your art remains vibrant for years to come.
Whilst no form of print, canvas or otherwise, should be kept in direct sunlight, UV inks contain light stabilisers that can keep prints looking new for anything up to 200+ years in ideal conditions.
Our canvas art is printed on heavyweight canvas media. After trialling countless canvas types from manufacturers all over the world, we have found that this media scores highly in all areas.
It is extremely durable, provides amazing colour reproduction and detail and the surface is very consistent and bright. If there's a better media for printing striking canvas art, we've yet to find it!
Prints are throughly checked by our staff at each stage of the process for faults, however small. If a canvas print doesn't meet our high standards, it won't leave the doors. |

One of the most important aspects of the printing process is colour management, which involves the calibration of printers, monitors, scanners and software. This ensures that the colour of your canvas prints closely match the previews you on the site.
Thorough colour management is a complex, on-going process that requires attention to detail and specialist technology such as a Spectrophotometer.
Our software, displays and printing technology are professionally colour-managed at each stage of the production process to the ensure accurate colour consistency.
As monitors and settings vary greatly, it is important when deciding on canvas art that your own monitor has a basic level of calibration. This ensures that it is displaying colours correctly, giving you a true accurate representation of our artwork.
To do this in the absence of specialist equipment, we would recommend using a free tool such as QuickGamma (or Adobe Gamma, if you have Adobe software installed).
Often, monitors display too much Blue, making colours look dull and dark. You will be surprised at how much better things look on a neutral monitor! |
We use only the finest, precision-machined South American Rosewood Paulownia and Fir timber stretcher frames to frame our art, complete with cross-bracing where necessary.
These premium stretcher frames are cut with a curved profile and rounded edges. These minimise contact with the front face of the canvas, preventing unsightly impression marks and surface cracking.
Importantly, our frames are fully finger-jointed. This means that longer frames are made from several lengths of wood pressure-jointed together, enabling the frame to resist warping much more effectively.
This ensures an exceptionally straight frame, even at large canvas sizes.

The process of framing canvas art, where the print is tightly stretched over around the sides of a box stretcher frame, is called gallery-wrapping. The dextrous, manual nature of the process means it takes skill and experience to achieve a high quality finish.
To complete the piece, we use tensioning wedges to fully-taughten the canvas print. As a woven material, canvas relaxes to an extent over time.
These wedges allow you to easily retighten your canvas art if necessary in the future. For more information on how to tension your canvas art, please see our article on tensioning wedges.
