Photo Restoration & Scanning Tips

Photo restoration can save irreplaceable photographs and preserve an important part of your family history. Surprising amounts of detail can be revealed, even from ripped edges, worn corners, creases and folds.

Simply scan in your photo, whether it's black and white, sepia or colour. By capturing the image electronically the digital copy can be enhanced and manipulated by our digital artists. In order to get the best from your scanner, follow these simple steps:

  • Check the scanner platen (glass) for any smudges, fingerprints or dust and clean the scanner as per the manufacturers instructions.
  • Check the photograph for any smudges, fingerprints or dust. Using a lint free cloth, gently remove any surface dirt and dust.
  • If your photo has been bent or has creases and folds, please put a weight such as a book on the photo after placing it on the scanner in order to keep it flat.
  • Set your scanner to the default factory setting. Check to make sure that your scanner software is not making any type of corrections or adjustments (these will be performed by us).
  • For photos that are larger than 6" x 4" please set the resolution to 600 dpi. Smaller photos may require scanning at 900 or 1200 dpi. This will effectively magnify the photo, capturing more detail.
  • Scan the photo in colour, even if your photo is black and white or sepia and save it in .JPG format.
